Strategic Plan for NYSAFLT 2014-2018

Vision:
NYSAFLT will work toward offering educators more efficient and effective tools to enhance their professional practices.

Public Advocacy: Continue to communicate the needs and strengths of LOTE education and of NYSAFLT with the public.

  • Garner consistent legislative support on the local, state and national level.
  • Educate our educational communities about current LOTE trends and best practices to enhance the development of second language acquisition.
  • Increase the visibility of NYSAFLT award winners.
  • Increase the participation of NYSAFLT leadership in promoting our public advocacy message through awards, scholarships and grant opportunities.
  • Provide administrators with information on how their staff can receive APPR professional development through NYSAFLT.

Technology: Continue to develop and implement means of communication via state-of-the-art technological processes

  • Continue to offer webinars and other virtual professional development opportunities.
  • Provide members with improved access and control over their NYSAFLT membership information.
  • Continue to improve upon the reduction and/or elimination of paper at conferences, workshops and events.
  • Investigate new and emerging technologies that may have benefits to NYSAFLT and LOTE education and share as appropriate.

Networking: Continue to collaborate with professionals and organizations of all languages and curricular areas.

  • Continue to work with the New York State Education Department to reinstate state LOTE assessments.
  • Develop base minimum criteria/guidance for cumulative LOTE assessments created by outside organizations that are aligned with the criteria of Checkpoint A and B assessments and provide, for example, a seal of approval for such assessments.
  • Provide professional development opportunities regarding the ACTFL Program Standards for Preparation of Foreign Language Teachers and the ACTFL position statements.
  • Provide administrators and supervisors with a guide of best practice base criteria for foreign language teacher evaluations.
  • Support the implementation of critical languages.
  • Continue to develop resources and opportunities for growth for Post Secondary educators.
  • Use professional organizations as models to explore ways of improving how we meet the needs of our members.
  • Investigate and implement ways to bridge gaps that exist between the variety of school districts within New York State
  • Explore new relationships with non-LOTE organizations to discover best practices.
