James E. Allen Award Winners

Dr. James E. Allen served as Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner of Education in New York State for nineteen years and in the Federal Department of Health, Education and Welfare under the Nixon Administration. Throughout his career, he emphasized desegregation and literacy and was an expert in educational finance and fiscal policy. He held more than twenty-five honorary degrees. Dr. Allen died in 1971. This award recognizes and honors outstanding foreign language programs throughout New York State. One school district or school within each of NYSAFLT’s regions can be selected annually for the award. The selection committee takes into account the size of the district, number of languages offered, number of students taking languages, extra-curricular programs, public relations, teacher participation at local and state professional events, etc. One regional winner is named state-wide winner.
